Marcasite is found with lead and zinc minerals in metalliferous veins, as at Galena, Ill.,, and at Clausthal Zellerfeld and Linnich, Ger. Marcasite, which has the same chemical formula as pyrite (FeS 2) but crystallizes in the orthorhombic instead of the isometric system, alters upon weathering to ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid.

Nearly pure marcasite (90 to >95 weight percent of FeS2(totai)) formed in acidsulfate solutions when only S° (not H^S) was added. Over the range of M H2SO4, increasing acidity of the solution promoted marcasite formation over pyrite.

Marcasite jewelry is jewelry made from pyrite (fool's gold), not, as the name suggests, from marcasite. Pyrite is similar to marcasite, but more stable and less brittle. It is frequently made by setting small pieces of pyrite into silver. Cheaper costume jewelry is made by glueing pieces of pyrite rather than setting. A similarlooking type of jewelry can be made from small pieces of cut steel.

Abstract The formation of pyrite and marcasite from solutions between 100 and 300°C has been examined experimentally, and the solubility product for the initial precipitate upon mixing of Fe 2+ and H 2 S solutions has been determined. Below 300°C, pyrite and marcasite form via an FeS precursor.

marcasite/pyrite polymorph pair is probably the most famous polymorph pair next to the diamond/graphite pair. Marcasite is difficult to distinguish from pyrite when a lack of distinctive crystal habits exists. In fact, many specimens have been wrongly identified as pyrite or Marcasite by even experienced mineral collectors.

Pyrite is the most common sulfide associated with gold, and it is frequently associated with valuable sulfide minerals such as sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS 2), and galena (PbS). 1,2 Pyrite is also an undesired inorganic constituent present in coal. Flotation techniques have been developed to separate pyrite
